在我的记忆中，我学会的第一个英文单词是“OK”，现在汉语也逐渐接纳了这个舶来语，东北话更是直接简化为“O 了”，也就是OK的意思。那么OK什么意思呢，当然是汉语中“好”的意思。然而，“好”到底能有多好呢？汉语中我们通常会在“好”前面加上一些程度副词，比如说“很好”，“非常好”，“相当好”，甚至是“真TMD好”等等。
说实话，汉语中即使在“好”前面加了这么多程度副词，但具体好到什么程度，很大程度上也是见仁见智。举个例子，要不是当年赵本山的小品中宋丹丹说了句“相当精彩”用来纠正崔永元用的“很精彩”或“非常精彩”的不准确性，我们其实不容易分清，“相当”比“很”到底能厉害多少。大家可能都有这样的体会，刚开始学习英语的时候，由于单词量匮乏，更主要的是受汉语思维的影响，我们会习惯性地用汉语的定势去理解英语。
比如说“很好”这个词怎么用英文表达？假如我们就会一个英文中修饰“好”的单词“OK”, 那么“非常好”就应该是“veryOK”; “相当好”顺理成章就是“very very OK”。而当我们英语词汇量多点了以后会发现，即使是“veryvery OK”也赶不上一个“good”。
可随着我们进一步对英语的学习，尤其是跟真正的老外接触多了，会发现一个有趣的现象，很多老外跟你聊天或讨论问题，无论你说什么他们都“good, good, very good”。一开始听到一个老外认可自己的观点/结果用“good”这个单词，都不由得喜出望外，因为这个评价“好”啊，级别不低呀。这里的感觉有点像英文中另外一个单词“interesting”。
当我们第一次听到老外对自己的工作“interesting”（感兴趣）的时候，那种感觉真得很爽。要知道，连老外对自己的工作都感兴趣，你说我这工作的潜力会有多大？这绝对是一个可以跟国内同行吹嘘的资本，甚至有的人会把这些经历写入个人简历。可是，但是，可但是，当我们跟这帮老外进一步熟悉以后会发现，这帮鬼子原来是你说啥他都“good, good, interesting”不离嘴，简直就是他们的口头令。
原来的很高评价竟然这么不值钱，实在是让人泄气！然而英文中对“好”程度的界定其实是有很明确的单词的。
我们以澳洲基金评审申请打分的标准为例，具体解释一下英文中“好”到底能好到了什么程度：A: Exceptional- Of the higest quality andat the forefrontof research in the field. Approximately 5% of the propsoalsshould receiveratings in this band. Recommend unconditionally.
B: Outstanding- High quality research and astronglycompetitive proposal. Approximately of 15% of proposals should receiveratingsin this band. Strongly support recommendation of funding.
C: Excellent- An interesting, sound andcompelling proposal.Approximately 20% of proposal. Approximately 20% ofproposals should receiveratings in this band. Support recommendation of fundingwith reservation.
D: Good- A sound research proposal, butlacks a compellingelement. Approximately 40% of proposals are likely to fallinto this band.Unsupportive of recommending for funding.
E: Acceptable- The proposal isuncompetitive relative toother proposals. Approximately 20% of proposals arelikely to fall into thisband.
